How to Find Your Purpose When Everything Feels Unclear

Purpose is not a destination. It is a direction. And you can start walking in it today.

There comes a point in many women’s lives when everything looks right from the outside and nothing feels right from the inside. The career is progressing. The family is intact. The life is, by most measures, a good one. And yet something is missing — a sense of meaning, of alignment, of doing work that truly matters.

If you have ever found yourself lying awake wondering is this it? — you are not broken. You are asking one of the most important questions a human being can ask. And that question is the beginning, not the evidence of failure.

Why Purpose Feels So Hard to Find

We have been sold a narrative about purpose that sets us up to struggle with it. The story goes: your purpose is a single, specific calling — some grand destiny that arrives in a flash of inspiration and then becomes your life’s mission. If you have not found it yet, the story implies, you are either not listening hard enough or simply not one of the chosen few who get to have one.

This is not how purpose actually works for most people.

Purpose is not usually a single revelation. It is a thread you follow gradually, through experience, reflection, and honest self-enquiry. It is built from the intersection of what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you are willing to show up for even when it is hard.

Signs You Are Disconnected from Purpose

  • You feel like you are going through the motions rather than genuinely engaged
  • You have achievements you are proud of but they feel hollow
  • You find it difficult to get excited about the future
  • You feel a nagging sense that you are meant to be doing something different — but you cannot name what
  • You compare yourself to others who seem to have it figured out and feel behind

These are not signs of ingratitude or weakness. They are your internal compass trying to get your attention.

Practical Steps to Reconnect with Your Purpose

1. Look backwards before you look forwards

Purpose is often hiding in your past. Think about the moments in your life when you felt most fully yourself — most alive, most engaged, most like you were exactly where you were supposed to be. What were you doing? Who were you with? What did those moments have in common? The patterns you find are clues.

2. Notice what makes you angry

Anger often points to our deepest values. What injustices or problems in the world genuinely make you want to do something? The things that break your heart, that you cannot scroll past without stopping — those are indicators of what you care about most. And caring deeply about something is often where purpose takes root.

3. Pay attention to what energises you

Track your energy over the course of a week. Which activities, conversations, or tasks leave you feeling more alive? Which leave you feeling drained? Your energy is intelligent. It knows what aligns with who you are. Follow it.

4. Experiment rather than decide

You do not have to make a definitive declaration about your purpose. You can simply try things. Volunteer for a cause. Take a short course in something you have always been curious about. Have conversations with people doing work that interests you. Purpose is often found through action, not through thinking alone.

5. Start with values, not visions

Before asking what should I do with my life, ask what do I believe in? What matters to you at the deepest level? When you build your life around your values rather than around outcomes or expectations, a sense of purpose tends to follow naturally.

6. Give yourself permission to evolve

The purpose that fits you at 25 may not be the purpose that fits you at 40. And that is not failure — that is growth. Allow your understanding of your purpose to develop as you develop. The goal is not to find the one final answer. The goal is to keep living with intention.

A Note on the Clarity Myth

Many people are waiting for complete clarity before they take a step. They want to know exactly where they are going before they begin moving. But clarity rarely comes from standing still. It comes from moving — from taking the next small step in the direction that feels most true, then adjusting from there.

You do not need to see the whole path. You just need enough light for the next step.

You Were Created with Purpose

There is something specific that you are here to contribute. It may not look like someone else’s calling. It may be quieter than you expected, or bigger, or stranger. But it belongs to you. And the fact that you are searching for it is evidence that you are not willing to settle for a life that does not mean something.

That is not a small thing. That is everything.
